Game 8 – Deloitte Dragons vs. Modern Drunkards
The 10.10pm game time did not stop the Dragons from turning out in force to face the unbeaten Modern Drunkards. With almost enough players to field 2 teams, the Dragons took to the ‘showcourt’ – court 10 – complete with stadium seating and premium polished floors. There was much belated elation pre-game when the league table showed the Dragons had actually won our previous encounter with the Trash Bags 32-29, not losing 28-29 as the electronic scoreboard had displayed last week.
The euphoria however quickly subsided when the whistle was blown, and some seriously sloppy offensive and defensive play saw the Dragons trailing 4-17 very quickly. The Dragons then came to the realisation that the Drunkards were fielding 3 girls – many eyebrows were raised regarding the gender of the 3rd female on the opposing team, however we quickly reacted by playing 3 girls of our own. Tiff was driving and penetrating the key well and creating scoring opportunities, however we lacked in the rebounding department. Goran and Ben ran the ball hard, creating plenty of attacking opportunities, however we failed to convert baskets and the Drunkards were slowly increasing their lead. The latter part of the first half saw us pick up our game. Arms were up, blocks were made, rebounds were taken, and baskets were coming quick and fast. The late drive saw us etch away at the Drunkards’ lead and put us within a few baskets at half time.
Tiff’s encouraging words at the break pumped the team up and we stepped onto the court a reinvigorated outfit. Chowla viciously maintained possession, hugging the ball like her favourite teddy bear from back when she was in primary school (as a matter of fact, she still hugs that very same bear today). Brooke dominated on the perimeter and made some good passes to Tiff and Anna waiting in the key. Our rebounding game also picked up as the girls scrambled for anything that fell loose. Despite this, as fatigue set in we were not quick enough to man every player, leaving the Drunkards open to take free shots or drive nearer to the key and pass it off for an easy basket.
Ben and Goran subbed back on and injected some much needed intensity into the game. Ben’s finesse and ball skill saw the Drunkards falling over trying to keep up, however the lead was by this stage too far to catch before the clock wound down. The game ended in an unflattering 31-22 defeat, our first official loss of the season. Bad luck guys!
Special thanks to our supporters, the crippled Chin “Pho Pho” Phoa, and Caho, who kept a close eye on the score and took some utterly useless photos.
Thanks also to all those that played – Orlando "OG", Frank the Tank, Goran “Bulldog” Mitrevski, Ben “Hot Shot” Hui, Sanji, Anna “AK47” K, Tiff, Chowla, "Steve Tyler".
Our next game is in 2 weeks at 10:10 and sees us pitted against the Modern Boosh, where we will come out fired up and ready to regain top of the table status!
